Too Big for its Boots?

An introduction to the challenges and delights of larger scale work, led by Liz Pugh, producer for Walk the Plank (www.walktheplank.co.uk) and director of several outdoor site-specific performances designed for large audiences, and a wide range of other events - including processions, parades, and fireshows - across the UK.

The workshop will offer an introduction to the design and delivery of larger scale work, borne out of the wisdom that comes from bitter experience, and an enthusiasm or work that is both ambitious and appropriate for the location and for the occasion.

Liz will share case studies from various shows - some touring, some one-off, some site-specific - and her insights will help participants build a shared vocabulary with which to tackle the challenges of large scale work; and some considerations about how to realise those big ideas.

Practical exercises in small groups will give participants ways of thinking about scale, and encouragement to harness the landscape, and care for the audience, in order to create memorable outdoor work that resonates with those who witness it, or participate in its creation.

This intensive day will also offer an opportunity, in the evening session, for

one-to-one surgeries and/or peer learning, when people bring their particular projects and ideas into a forum for debate, led by the trainer. .

As a theatremaker who has worked with fire, with carnival and procession, with large scale images, music and pyro, Liz will bring a breadth of experience to the workshop whilst trying to tailor the session to the particular needs and experience of the participants to make it as relevant as possible.
